Bogor (ANTARA News) - As many as 234 species of the 1599 bird species threatened with extinction in the country, said Henny Sembiring, Head of Communications and Business Development of Birds of Indonesia in Bogor, Saturday.

Based on the observation of the Wild Bird Society of Indonesian Observer in 2009, said Henny, the number of birds in the world around 10 000 species and 1599 species of which there are in Indonesia with 353 species of endemic bad.

"Indonesia has 1599 species of birds, or ranking fourth in the world. But, from 1599 the species, of which 234 species threatened with extinction," said Henny M. Sembiring.

He explained the 234 endangered bird species was composed of 117 endangered species, 17 kinds of critical, 30 types of tiles, and 70 species are vulnerable.

According to Henny, environmental degradation affects the bird's extinction, in addition to human activities that do hunt these birds.

"Damage to the environment make the bird move to another place to find a safer haven," he said.

He said the increasing number of development growth reduces the amount of green open space as a place to live birds.

Birds are animals sensitive to the environment. Birds have a basic need to place looking for food, shelter and breeding grounds, he said.

"The birds will migrate when their homes are no longer able to meet their basic needs," said Henny.

He gave an example in the city of Bogor. Types of water birds usually occupy Ciliwung had not seen since last year, such as the type of Mandar, king prawns, and Kingfisher java.

"Currently we have rarely seen birds usually inhabit water Ciliwung. This condition is because the quality was not good times again, birds would not stay again," said Henny.

He said the threat of extinction also occurred at Kebun Raya Bogor. She then quoted Siti Priyono LIPI researchers at a seminar held recently, that in 1950 there were 150 species of birds at the Bogor Botanical Gardens.

"Now the bird species living in the Bogor Botanical Gardens 90 species, 'he said.

He asserted that the birds are part of the ecosystem. Therefore, the loss of birds going to affect the chain of life. And, this condition is not good for human survival.

Loss of bird species, he said, could be a sign for the local communities and local governments that environmental conditions are not good anymore.

Indonesia has the greatest biodiversity. But unfortunately, because people are not smart guard, Indonesia became the number one nation's most endangered biodiversity.

Henny appealed to the public more aware there are threats of extinction by preserving the environment and stop the hunting of these birds.

Wild Bird Society of Indonesian observer who care about the birds engaged in various activities and socialization to protect the ecosystem of birds.

Various observations they have done, for example, by identifying and documenting the types of birds in Indonesia. Through these activities, can provide references about bird species found in Indonesia. (*)
